Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy is surely what the chef's kiss emoji was made for? 🤌🏻 Of course, at the time, emojis weren't even a thing on my naff old word processor!
It is funny how quickly communication moved on. I remember having a phone that didn’t actually store names or numbers and so whenever anyone called it was always a surprise who was on the other end. A thought that my “won’t answer if there’s no name associated in my phone” self finds horrifying now!
Unfinished Sympathy is a time capsule song for sure, one that should be passed down through the ages. I now realise that the vanity of having “Exit Music (For A Film)” as a last track won out over the real star of the show that is “Talk Show Host”. I may have to add a bonus track edit 😂
I’ve just been reminiscing about Blue Hotel by Chris Isaak. And also, I love film soundtracks so much. They’re mixtapes themselves and have introduced me to so many tracks and artists I might not have discovered by myself.
A big YES from me on soundtracks. I love the narrative flowing through them and the rise and fall in actual soundtracks (rather than songs from, if that makes sense), they’re a great way to re-watch a film without re-watching or for background sounds to work to when words are too much.
But I do also love soundtracks such as Almost Famous, Romeo + Juliet, Gatsby, Kill Bill, The Hunger Games, there are so many! I want to spend my afternoon seeking them all out now instead of working.
Sunshine is the most emotional rollercoaster of a soundtrack ever. Kanada’s Death, Pt 2. The Interstellar soundtrack too. Where The Crawdads Sing - oh so many. This has to be a new mix tape, for sure!
Yes, yes - get mixing! I also love the soundtrack for The English Patient. I haven't watched the filming years, but was reminded of the music the other day and have Spotified the hell of out it since then.
I love the idea of Spotifying the hell out of something. That’s basically been me with the Eras Tour playlist (even though I don’t have tickets - sob!)
I think we might be a similar age - that playlist made me really, really nostalgic. Wouldn't mind a bit of Perfect Blue Buildings by Counting Crows for added angst in there as well!
Ahhhh, Long December or Colorblind nearly made the cut. There were honestly so many, I feel like we grew up in a golden age of music (thought I’m sure every generation thinks that) to have so many emerging genres in such a short time and to be blessed with so many good artists that have endured and are still making music.
I’m thinking of doing a follow on playlist “To all the boys I’ve loved before” of songs that have soundtracked relationships and crushes. It’s an oddly mixed bag so I’m not so sure though!
Born early 80’s btw, my family all loved music so I grew up with all the best residue of 60’s / 70’s and then 80’s too as well as getting my own musical identity at arguably one of the best times for it - the rise of girl power (not my thing but paved the way), Brit pop, indie, house, boy bands, Seattle rock scene and some truly magnificent independent artists. The 90’s ran so everything else after could saunter in style with attitude and swagger.
I feel like the 90's was special, so much incredible music and also MTV which I could spend hours in front of. By mum says exactly the same about the 60's and it makes me wonder if because those are the years of your life when you have the time and freedom to really enjoy them, they hold more meaning, along with the soundtrack to them?
